2010 Census forms due Friday

ALBANY -- The African Heritage Complete Count Committee is urging people to complete and mail back their 2010 Census forms by Friday's deadline.
Inner cities across the country have lower mail back rates than suburban and rural areas, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and academics. In Albany's downtown census tracts the mail back rate ranges from 39 percent to 60 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The citywide return rate is 61 percent.

A news conference on the importance of getting the word out in the African American community to meet the deadline will be held at 5 p.m. today at the Crenshaw Community Center, 7 Morton Ave.

"Residents who fail to mail back their forms by April 16 may be visited by a census worker in May," U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert Groves said in a statement Tuesday.
