CENSUS 2010: Latino Population Growth Outpaces Estimates
A new Pew Hispanic Center study of the recently released 2010 Census results shows that the growth of the Latino community in the United States outpaced all of the previous estimates. Out of the thirty-three states for which the census bureau has released a count of the Latino population, twenty-eight had more Hispanics than expected. In fact, Latinos have accounted for most of the discrepancy between 2010 Census counts and census estimates of states' total populations.
The official census count of 38.7 million Latinos is 1.5 percent higher than the bureau's previous estimate. Latinos accounted for the majority (approximately 58 percent) of the total population growth over the decade in those 33 states.
"Hispanics are in some places growing faster than we had thought," Pew demographer Jeffrey Passel told USA Today. "This sort of broad pattern suggests immigration into these new areas was a bit higher."
