Hispanics nationwide: a snapshot
An in-depth report about the national Hispanic population shows big growth in small places like Luzerne, Pennsylvania, reports spikes in traditionally smaller Hispanic groups like Dominicans and reveals that 37 percent of Hispanics consider themselves neither white or black but of "some other race," according to recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Nationwide, the Hispanic population grew four times faster than the total population between 2000 and 2010. The most recent release by the U.S. Census Bureau provides a more in-depth look at the national Hispanic population trends.
The report, which mainly provides national data, does include a city-by-city ranking that shows San Diego has the ninth largest population of Hispanics in the country. The city does not make the Top 10 list of areas with the highest percentage of Hispanics.
Hispanics make up nearly 29 percent of San Diego city's 1.3 million residents. Nationwide, they make up 16 percent of the total population, or 308.7 million.
Hispanics, according to the census, are those who self-report Hispanic ethnicity in addition to selecting a race category, such as white, black, etc.. The ethnicity includes those who are both foreign-born as well as native U.S.-born individuals of Hispanic origin.
Here are some highlights from the national population report on Hispanics, comparing 2010 to 2000:
- The U.S. population grew by 27.3 million, Hispanics account for more than half of the growth (15.2 million)
- The Hispanic population grew 43 percent versus the total U.S. population, which grew 9.7 percent
- Of all Hispanics 94 reported they are one race and 6 percent reported two or more races.
- Of Hispanics who reported one race, 53 percent reported white and 37 percent reported “some other race,” with write-ins that included “Latino,” “Mexican,” “Salvadoran,” or other national origins.
- The top ten places with the highest number of Hispanics are, in order from largest: New York, NY., Los Angeles, Houston, Tx., San Antonio, Tx., Chicago. Ill., Phoenix, Az., El Paso, Tx., Dallas, Tx., San Diego and San Jose.
- The top ten places with the highest percentage of Hispanics are, in order from largest: East Los Angeles, Laredo, TX., Hialeah, FL., Brownsville, Tx., McAllen, Tx., El Paso, Tx., Santa Ana, Salinas, Oxnard and Downey.
- About three-quarters of the Hispanic population self-reported Mexican, Puerto Rican and Cuban origins in 2010. The groups grew at slower rates than other groups.
- Mexican-origin makes up the largest Hispanic group, 63 percent, up from 58 percent in 2000 of the total Hispanic population
- Three Hispanic groups grew to more than 1 million each for the first time. They are Salvadoran, 1.6 million; Dominican, 1.4 million, and Guatemalan, 1 million.
- Percentage-wise the groups that grew the most were Spaniard, up 534 percent from 100,135 to 635, 253; Uruguayan, up 202 percent from 18,804 to 56,884; Honduran, up 191 percent, from 217,569 to 633,401; and Guatemalan, up 180 percent from 372,487 to 1,044,209.
- The south experienced the largest increase of Hispanics with a 57 percent jump compared to 2000. The Hispanic population in the Midwest increased 49 percent.
- The West and the Northeast Hispanic population, both long-standing, also grew by 34 percent and 33 percent respectively.
- California, Texas and Florida continue to rank as the top three states for the Hispanic population.
- Eight states are home to 75 percent of the Hispanic population, all have more than 1 million Hispanic residents. Those states are California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, Arizona, New Jersey and Colorado.
- In another nine states, mostly in the south, the Hispanic population doubled in size but still remains less than 9 percent of the total population. Those states are Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and South Dakota.
- In the counties with at least 10,000 or more Hispanics in 2010 the top five fastest growing were Luzerne, PA., Henry, GA., Kendall, Ill., Douglas, GA. And Shelby, AL..
