Hartford Census jobs go begging
HARTFORD, Conn. --Despite high unemployment in Connecticut, Census jobs are going begging.
The Hartford office of the U.S. Census Bureau is struggling to fill between 1,000 and 1,500 temporary jobs that pay $15 to $22.75 an hour.
More than 4,200 have applied for the jobs, but the census office needs to recruit more by April 27 because most will drop out or never show up for the jobs.
The work require Census employees to walk door-to-door at night and weekends tracking down residents who didn't fill out census forms.
In addition, 43 percent of applicants won't even make the list of those eligible to be hired. They'll fail a written test or criminal check or neglect to respond to background questions.
